Uganda’s top professional, Ronald Rugumayo, tied with Kenya’s Simon Ngige in second place finish, 10- strokes behind winner Zimbabwean Robson Chinhoi at Uganda Professionals Golf Open hosted at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa on October 29th.
The pair tied on aggregate score of 287, best performance by Rugumayo since he turned pro four years ago. Toro Golf Club based golfer attributes his good show to good preparations that enabled him to build the layers of confidence, self-belief and hope to win.
His growth has been impeccable. He missed the cut at the 2019 edition of the Pros Open in Kigo but in 2020 when Chinhoi won at Kitante, the former Uganda Amateur Open champion finished ninth. Last year, Rugumayo came fourth, still finishing as the country’s best player.
“I love the progress. It’s a process I have to stay focused and keep grinding. My time is coming,” said Rugumayo.
“The part of my game that really worked was my mental toughness. I really behaved well after all sorts of shots and special thanks to Phil Jenkins for the mental tips. Nothing beats discipline, hard work and honesty,” he added.
His best round was the five-under 67 comprising five birdies on the front nine and an eagle on the 13th green that he shot during third round. This pushed him to six-under overall after 54 holes, five within Chinhoi’s reach going into finals.
Uganda’s best professional has eyes on competing in big and competitive tournaments in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Nigeria.
