Andrew Ssekibejja is the champion of the 2022 Tusker Malt Lager Uganda Amateurs Golf Open. The artisan golfer at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course tallied a total of 300 strokes in grueling 72 holes’ action.

Ssekibejja, playing off handicap four, carded 295 over 72 holes to win his first title by five strokes at only his third attempt relegating day two leader, Michael Tumusiime, to second place.

Tumusiime started the final day brilliantly with two birdies, an eagle and five pars; and was in the lead from the 9th to the 17th holes when he collapsed. His deathtrap was that second last hole that saw him card a 9 on a par 5. That ended his hopes.

The 26-year-old golfer, thrilled by his victory, promised his five-year-old home club Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa even better performances in future.

“I started very well but trouble came for me when I got a double bogey on hole 8, then another on hole 9.  Using my course knowledge I calmed down and engaged a new gear like a Formula One Car,” Ssekibejja said in his victory speech.

“I love to play for the crowd. They have been supportive since day one. Winning the Open is the best way to pay back. I am have to have won,” he added.

For the six holes in the final round, Ssekibejja was in scintillating form, recording three birdies on the par 5-hole no.2 and two par 4 holes 5 and 6. He faded with two consecutive double bogies on holes 8 and 9 as he trailed the front 9 by a stroke behind Tumusiime.

Ssekibejjabogied Holes 10 and 11, parred Hole No. 12, recovered with a birdie on 13, registered pars on Holes 14, 15 and 16, leveled the scores on Hole 16 as his closest rival Tumusiime bogied.

The turning point was on par 5 Hole 17 where he registered a birdie. At this time, it was work done – Ssekibejja was already five strokes ahead with one hole to play.

On the par-4 hole 18, Tumusiime, Nsubuga, Cwinya-ai and Ssekibejja all holed out with par scores as the crowd carried Ssekibejja shoulder high in celebrations.

Tumusiime finished with 300 gross in 4 rounds, 5 strokes behind the winner.Cwinyaai fought but could only settle for third place.

From humble beginnings to winning Uganda’s most prestigious golf title, 2022 Tusker Malt Uganda Amateurs Golf Open Championship, Andrew Ssekibejja has demonstrated that focus and determination can take you beyond skies.

The day climaxed with a grand prize giving ceremony and launch of a Strategic Plan 2022-2027- For The Love of Golf at the Tusker Malt Hospitality Village.

Tusker Malt Lager, a premium brand of Uganda Breweries Limited, is the Title Sponsor of Uganda Amateur Golf Open 2022.
