Martha Babirye Bags Third Uganda Ladies Open Title

I am excited to win my third Uganda Ladies Open. My putting was good and my driving was on point. I didn’t go into any water and I didn’t enter any bunker – Martha Babirye.

Martha Babirye has won the 2022 Tusker Malt Lager Uganda Ladies Golf Open championship after returning a gross score of 233 over 54 holes at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa.This is Babirye’s third title after two back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020 at Serena and Uganda Golf Club respectively.

Babirye joins the list of the greatest in the history of Uganda Ladies Open Championship after Flavia Namakula and Alice Kego who won the prestigious title six and twelve times respectively. She ties with Eaton Angel of Tanzania has also won it three times – 2012, 2013 and 2017.

“I’m excited to win my third Uganda Ladies Open. My putting was good and my driving was on point. I didn’t go into any water and I didn’t enter any bunker,” said Babirye after she made her final putt on the 18th hole.

Babirye joins the list of the greatest in the history of Uganda Ladies Open Championship after Flavia Namakula and Alice Kego who won the prestigious title six and twelve times respectively. She ties with Eaton Angel of Tanzania has also won it three times – 2012, 2013 and 2017.

Handicap one Babirye opened up with a 4-shot lead after the opening round 3-over 75 gross score. She faded in round two with an undesirable 8-over 80 gross score that lowered her lead to one shot as the closest challenger Peace Kabasweka played catch-up with 5-over 77 during round 2. She improved in third and last round with 6-over 78 to amass a total of 233 gross.

MeronKyomugisha recorded the best score in the final round, a par score (72) to claim second place having earlier played 10-over 82 in the opening two rounds.

Eva Magala, Gloria Mbaguta, MacklineNsenga, RestyNalutaya and Wendy Angu’deyo shot 252, 254, 260, 262 and 270 to finish in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions respectively.

Lillian Koowe and Anne Abeja tied in ninth place to complete the leaderboard of Top 10.
