Mehta Golf Club golfer, Godfrey Nsubuga, has every reason to smile after he won two major tournaments in just one weekend.
First, he produced a round of two-under-70 to win the Kakira Golf Open at Jinja Golf Club on Friday, November 11th and and a day later, he competed in the two-day Equity Namulonge Golf Open, winning it through sudden-death play-off.
The scratch had to first rush to Jinja Golf Club on the Friday morning where he sunk five birdies on Holes No.3, No.5, No.8, No.12 and No.17 enroute winning the Kakira Open. He competed closely with Michael Tumusiime of Entebbe Golf Club who shot 71 andLuletSande of Jinja Golf Club who scored 72 to finish in third place.
The annual event was organized by Jinja Golf Club in partnership with Kakira Sugar Ltd and CFAO Motors Uganda Ltd that staked Toyota Belta worth Us$25,000 (Shs95m)for the lucky golfer who would play a hole-in one.
“It all happened fast. I just had good timing and being that one was a one-day event, it made it easier to manage the two of them,” Nsubuga reacted.


In the evening, the sensational golfer, together with fellow national team players – Ibrahim Bagalana, Joseph Cwinyaai, the new Uganda Open champion Andrew Ssekibejja and Joseph Kasozi- drove via Kayunga toThe Marylouise Simkins Memorial Golf Club, Namulonge for the Equity Bank sponsored Namulonge Open.
Towering Nsubuga shot 74 and 70 and tied on an aggregate score of 144 gross after Namulonge artisan player, Joseph Kakooza, returned 77 and 67 in round one and round two respectively.
The national team golfer needed a sudden death victory on par-4 Hole. 9 after a tie with Namulonge’s best.
Nsubuga opened his round with a 3-over-par 74 on day one and bettered with 2-under-par 70. His challenger Kakooza opened with unimpressive 5-over-par 77 and slashed ten strokes with the tournament’s best gross score of 5-under-par 67 to force the play-off.
The play-off on the par-4 Hole. 18 saw Nsubuga shot a par score as Kakooza bogeyed.Kakooza drove his second shot 3 meters from the green before chipping the ball, two club lengths from the pin.Nsubuga chipped for his second shot, and it settled a club length from the pin.
Nsubuga looked for birdie opportunity but his first putt settled on the green cup as he rolled the ball in for the par.Kakooza was left with one chance to level with a successful putt or miss it and surrender victory to the rival and the latter happened.
The duo of Kakooza (144) and Joseph Kasozi (149)finished first and second runner-up respectively in the Equity Bank sponsored tournament.
Besides the trophy, Nsubuga won a 43 Inch SMART Toshiba Television flat screen for his effort.
JoramTumwine and EdraeKagombe won the male and female seniors’ trophies.Peter Mubiru took the group A men nett, Joel Kagoro (group B) and Isaac (group C).
JoweriaNamanda won the best lady gross (79) and the net winner was handicap 36 golfer Sheila Ayebare (68).
Joel Kagoro and Dinah Angol took home the best nearest to the pin accolades for men and ladies respectively.
Timothy Lwanga got the longest drive trophy for men while MeronKyomugishatookone for the ladies.
Equity Bank Executive Director, Anthony Kituuka, Uganda Golf Union Vice President Jackson Were, Marylouise Simkins Memorial Golf Club -Namulonge Chairperson Martin Mubiru, Captain Collins Bulafugraced the official closing ceremony.
