Charlie Woods, The Cub of Tiger Woods Starts Winning at 14

Charlie Woods fired off a 6-under 66 to earn a spot in the Notah Begay III National Championship with his dad, Tiger Woods, caddying.

Event: Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship
Venue: Mission Inn Resort, Orlando, Florida
Dates: September 24-25, 2023

Charlie Woods, the 14-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods, is doing what his dad did best – Winning golf tournaments. The teenage Woods won the age 14-15 Division at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championships in Orlando, Florida. Charlie shot a career-low 66 at Mission Inn Resort, aided by nine birdies, including two on his last two holes, to win the event by one stroke.

It was a family affair for the young cub as his dad, Tiger Woods, was on the bag. To see the Big Cat carrying and walking 18 holes is huge. He was seen walking one of his courses earlier this summer, but to do this for a youth golf tournament is an even greater sign that the legendary golfer is close to returning to action.

Charlie opened his round with three straight birdies on holes 1-3. The young Woods bogeyed the par-4 5th and par-4 7th before landing his fourth birdie on the par-3 8th. He went out in 33 strokes.

After the turn, Charlie made three straight birdies on holes 10-13. A bogey on the par-4 16th kept his competitor Kaden Puranik right in the mix with him. However, a birdie on the par-5 17th and then an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th secured Woods’ win by one shot and a return to Coushatta.

“Shooting 68 last year and followed up with 66 this year, obviously, this course is great for me. You have to go shoot a low round to win this thing, and it’s not going to be given,” Charlie Woods said.

“Just took it one shot at a time, don’t think too far ahead, and you just gotta keep eating. That’s it,” he added.

Charlie seems to possess a number of the same attributes as his father, whether it’s enjoying a little trash talk on the golf course or rising to the occasion in big moments. And much like Tiger Woods seemed to do with ease while amassing 82 PGA Tour victories and 15 major titles, Charlie Woods stepped up and buried an important putt at an opportune time.

Charlie captured the title in the 14-15 age division by posting a final-round 66, his career-best in competition. Just like his dad has done so many times, Charlie dropped a testy birdie putt on the final hole to secure the victory.

After firing a 71 during the opening round, Tiger’s son rolled in nine birdies during the second round. He said having his father as his caddie helps to keep him grounded during these events.

“We just stay in our own little world. We take it one shot at a time. He puts me in my place,” Charlie said of having Tiger on the bag.

Just about three months ago, the son of 15-time major winner went out and dominated the Major Championship at Village Golf Course in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, winning the Boys 14-15 Division by eight strokes.

The son of golf legend shot 72-71 (143) to win the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s Major Championship at Village Golf Course. Charlie Woods, the event’s defending champion, won the 2-day, 36-hole major tournament. Charlie was the only player in the entire tournament to finish the weekend under par at one-under.

It was reminiscent of the type of unprecedented dominance that his father had in the late 90s to early 2000s when he was the undisputed best golfer on the planet.

Tiger Woods, an investor of the Hurricane Junior Tour, was actually on-hand at the tournament to watch his son’s impressive performance.

Given the way Charlie’s been playing, Tiger might have to hop on his back for the ride.

Tiger Woods’ 14-year-old son rising child golf star, played with his dad in a competitive golf tournament for the first time, competing in the 2020 PNC Championship in Orlando, Fla.

Charlie played with his dad in a competitive golf tournament for the first time, donning on matching purple polo shirts, in the PNC Championship to tie for seventh in a star-studded 20-player field made up exclusively of players to have won a major or The Players, plus their relatives.

Charlie stole the show as he showed off some impressive golfing skills on the course. At one point, he drove the ball around 175 yards, setting himself up for his first eagle. Tiger stood and watched proudly, later telling his son, “Awesome shot” and giving him a pat on the back.

“I really don’t care about my game. Just making sure Charlie has the time of his life and he’s doing that,” Tiger told reporters.

Charlie Woods will tee it up with the other qualifiers in the Notah Begay III National Championship on November 4-6 at Koasati Pines at Coushatta Casino Resort in Louisiana.
